Mrs. McGillicutty, of the RHOK, is hanging out at the beach (wishing she was somewhere cold of all things!) on vacation and so she thought that an ideal topic for the RHOK McLinky Monday would be ... vacations! What is my idea of a fun vacation?
For the last several years our family has gone on mini-vacations 2 or 3 times a year to Branson, Missouri. We have gone to a few of the shows and spent some time shopping in the outlet malls, but our very favorite thing to do is go to Silver Dollar City! Josiah and his friends will take off to stand in lines waiting for their turns on roller coasters and other rides while Bert and I walk sedately through the park admiring the displays of crafts, music, artistry, etc. and munching on smoked turkey legs and caramel drenched apple turnovers! When we grow weary of walking we find a spot to sit in an outdoor theater for a while and listen to whatever band has taken over the stage. At the end of the day we some times go to the Jubilee show in Echo Hollow (variety show that starts at park closing) or some times we go back to our hotel to swim and then go to dinner after the crowds have died down a bit. The last time we went to Branson we stayed in a 3 bedroom condo and I liked it even better!

Lately, Branson has grown too crowded and busy for my comfort so I am looking for a new favorite vacation spot. Somewhere with a cozy cabin or condo where I can enjoy time with my family away from the hustle and bustle of my daily life. Somewhere close to a lake or an ocean because I find the water to be one of my happy places! Somewhere with rockers or swings on the front porch (with wifi access) so I can sit out there blogging while surrounded by nature. Somewhere with all of that ... but it can't cost too much because I am well and truly BROKE! I'll keep looking!

What images come to mind when you think of the Maritimes? Does your mind paint a picture of the tides rushing in at the Bay of Fundy? Do you imagine strolling past colourful houses or along the coast? Perhaps you think first of a bright red, freshly-cooked lobster on your dinner plate.

The staff at Maxxim Vacations, a tour company with a variety of Maritimes-themed packages, knows Atlantic Canada well. They have compiled a list of the five most picturesque locations in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. Snap-happy tourists, or any traveller who longs to bring mental images of the Maritimes to life, should ensure these photogenic spots are on their itinerary.

1. Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. “Founded in 1753, modern day Lunenburg is a mélange of brightly-painted wooden houses and streets that meander up and down its steep hills. Head across the bay for a pretty shot of the town which will include numerous church spires and – if you’re in luck – the Blue Nose II, the schooner pictured on the Canadian dime, which calls Lunenburg home,” suggests Maxxim Vacations.

2. Port Royal National Historic Site. “Just 10 kilometres from the gracious and historic town of Annapolis Royal on the east coast of the Bay of Fundy, this is one of Nova Scotia’s “must-see” attractions,” raves Maxxim Vacations. ”Keep your camera ready for shots of costumed interpreters, lovingly-recreated Norman architecture of the early 1600s, and panoramic views of the Annapolis River.”

3. Hopewell Rocks. “One of the most iconic images of New Brunswick, the Rocks (located about 35 km from Moncton), stand as tall as 15 metres.  They were carved by the legendary tidal action of the Bay of Fundy and now resemble massive flowerpots – complete with greenery (trees) on top,” recommends Maxxim Vacations.

4. The College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts of Canada. “Maritime Canadians are fiercely proud of their Scottish heritage, and what better way to preserve it than at the only Celtic-themed college in North America?” suggests Maxxim Vacations. ”Located in Summerside, P.E.I, and open to the public, the college welcomes students who immerse themselves in bagpipe-playing, Highland dancing and more.”

5. Halifax’s waterfront. “Whether it’s buskers or boaters, Theodore Tugboat or the strolling tourists, Halifax’s waterfront is a feast for photographers,” recommends Maxxim Vacations. ”Meander along its length, dotted with cafes, museums and shops, or get the big picture on a harbour sightseeing cruise.”
